How do I become a christian?
What you need to know...
The Bible says that you were created for a relationship with God.
“…All things were created through Him and for Him.” -Colossians 1:16
This means that you were created to know God, to love God, to obey God, to enjoy God, and to bring glory to God. But there is a problem, we have all failed to do this because every single person has sinned.
“…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” -Romans 3:23
Sin is anything you do, think, or say that breaks the law of God. Sin is very serious. Sin separates us from a relationship with God, because God is perfect and holy, so He cannot be in the presence of sin.
“…But your iniquities have separated you from your God…” -Isaiah 59:2
Sin also earns us the wrath and judgment of God. The Bible says that God is a righteous Judge who has to punish sin. He cannot just overlook sin, and the Bible says that the punishment for sin is the eternal punishment of hell.
But there is good news! The Bible says that God loves us so much, that even though we have sinned, God has made a way for us to be forgiven of our sin, and to have a relationship with God.
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us” -Romans 5:8
“God so loved the World, that He sent His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16
2,000 years ago, God sent His one and only Son Jesus to Earth. Jesus lived the perfect life that we have all failed to live. Jesus never sinned. And yet, at the end of his life, Jesus was willingly executed on a cross for our sin. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, God placed all of our wretched sin on the sinless back of Jesus and punished Jesus to death for the sin that we deserved to be punished for.
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” -2 Corinthians 5:21
Jesus did not stay dead however. Three days later, God raised Jesus from the dead, conquering sin and death, and proving once and for all that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind.
Now, because of who Jesus is and what He has done, we all have a choice. If you choose, you can reject Jesus, in which case God will have to punish your sin on your own back forever in hell. Or you can turn away from your life of sin and trust in Jesus. If you really do that, submitting your life to Jesus as your Lord, then the Bible says that you will be forgiven of your sins, that you will have a relationship with God through Jesus, and that you will go to heaven when you die.
“…Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved …” -Acts 16:31
What will you choose? Will you turn to Jesus today and follow Him for the rest of your life?
“…the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel…” -Mark 1:15
